Technology Integration: What I've Learned

Technology integration and the digital word have been present in my classroom for the past few years.  This course has confirmed my philosophy regarding technology integration.  I am ending my course work with a better understanding of the value of technology in teaching today’s student.  I think of the digital immigrant, the teacher and the digital native, the student frequently when planning each week.  I feel confident that if I can incorporate technology into my lessons, I am increasing student engagement and hopefully their achievement.
Technology has helped me to facilitate lessons that reach the common core standards.  I found that the SMART board can assist multiple learning styles as they practice their skills to become proficient in a specific area such as counting and cardinality.  The use of a counting activity that relate to the student  day-to-day activities gives them an opportunity to relate their skills to their lives.  These activities are accompanied by integration of various digital tools.
The digital tools that we have shared in discussions and worked on in our course work have been beneficial.  I feel that Animoto, voice threads and podcasts to name a few are easily accessible tools that I can use with my students.  They have practical uses in the classroom in instruction and in assessment.
One area where my thinking has changed is the use of social media in my own classroom.  I found that social media can be a wonderful resource for communicating with parents.  This can be done by the teacher or by the students facilitated by the teacher.  I was able to use Twitter in my WebQuest to communicate to parents the exciting moments during our study of pumpkins.  In the future, I would like to use Twitter or an Edmodo page to inform parents of the day-to-day happenings and the learning that happens in our classroom.

Equal Access to the Digital World!

When I look back to my first days of teaching kindergarten, I can see just how greatly my classroom has evolved.  I have been writing to you about some neat tools we have been using to learn about pumpkins and how you can stay informed about the happenings in our pumpkin patch (our classroom).

Currently, we are using a WebQuest to discover how pumpkins grow.  Students are beginning to explore the digital world!  As a teacher, I work to give my students equal access to learning each day.  Our classroom and our school are committed to ”learning for all.”  This is the same for the use of technology in our classroom and school.  I want all students to have the opportunity to explore and use the digital tools that are the best for their learning.  I will be guiding them though the tools, but providing the access for all students is important.  The use of the tools should not be impacted by a student’s ability or need.  The tools in the digital work nicely compliment the needs of some students.  They help a teacher to have more access to the tools and strategies that can lead students to success.  We can work to help students access these tools just as we do with their learning.

I hope that you too can explore digital tools together with your children that lead them to loving learning!

Our Pumpkin Discoveries! Twitter:@MrsManningRm18

I hope that you have begun to hear about how wonderful our study of pumpkins has been in our classroom. We have been learning many interesting facts about pumpkins.  The students are excited about the important job they will have at the end of the unit study.  The farmers at Smolak Farms are excited to see what the students will create too.
I hope that you will be able to share in this excitement that is buzzing in our classroom.  I came across an article that gave me the idea to do just that for you through the use of social media.  I have created a Twitter page that will help you to know how our study of pumpkins is going each day.  In the article from the Daily Gleaner ,a young three year old girl that has a twitter account “shares her discoveries and commentary with her followers” (Daily Gleaner).   When I read the article, I was excited to start to see how beneficial the use of Twitter could be to my students and our classroom. I hope to use the site to inform you of what is happening during our study, but I also will be helping to students to share what we are learning with you!

Educational Value of Animoto

Can you answer the question the video asked you?

Do pumpkins come in different sizes?

The answer is yes!
Pumpkins come in many sizes. In the short video you just watched I showed you pictures of small, medium, large, and GIANT pumpkins.

I used a web tool called Animoto to make the video to show you the different sizes pumpkins can grow to. Animoto allows the creator to use pictures or video to share an idea with others. We can learn a lot about the sizes of the pumpkins by looking at the pictures. I like to use real life pictures to show you how the pumpkins grew to their sizes.

The creator can add titles and other words to show people more about their idea they are sharing about. I was able to pick the music and theme that my video has. I picked the leaves falling in the background since pumpkins are harvested in Fall.

When we come back from our field trip to Smolak Farm's Pumpkin Patch we can use Animoto to make a video to show our school the best pumpkins we picked.

Educational Value of Wordle

Look what I made you! A Wordle!

A wordle is a design made with words. All the words that I put into the design I made you are important to our learning about Pumpkins and how they grow.  Can you see how big the word pumpkin is? Pumpkins are what we will be learning about when we use this WebQuest.  The smaller words tell you about how the pumpkin will grow.  I made the words air, water, and soil a little bigger because without them the pumpkin could not grow.

You can try to make a Wordle at home about something you know a lot about like Fall or a farm. Visit www.wordle.net and make a word list and see what wonderful design you can make!
